Piled embankments
Piled embankments
A geosynthetic-reinforced earth structure over vertical bearing elements (piles) refers to a single- or multi-layer composite structure made of soil layers and geosynthetic reinforcement elements, which rests on natural, soft ground and the bearing element. The geosynthetic reinforcement has two main purposes: Firstly, it bridges the soft soil between the bearing elements and activates a mechanism to support a direct stress distribution from the embankment and traffic loads into the piles. Secondly, it provides additional stability to the embankment.
