Overview

Ehrensberger Quarry, had to implement rockfall protection as part of their strategy to widen the mining area. The ambitious project outlined the construction of a rockfall protection dam built as a back-to-back structure, a necessary safeguard for the people working in the mine. With a stringent timeframe, the design and construction processes were set to be completed within just seven weeks. This tight timeline demanded robust collaboration, and throughout the implementation process, our team worked hand in hand with both the designer and the contractor. The selected Polyslope S system, acknowledged for its cost-effectiveness, promised a short construction time and had the distinct advantage of leveraging construction materials readily available on site. Upon the project's successful completion, safety for all site users was significantly increased.

Challenge

The rockfall protection was installed using the OIB certified Polyslope® S system, ensuring consistent and reliable protection. However, the journey was not devoid of obstacles. Design assistance for the rockfall protection dam was provided by Solmax. This, coupled with the stringent construction deadline, was further complicated by the concurrent operations of the quarry site. Yet, by harnessing the capabilities of a specialized software for Polyslope S System, the team adeptly navigated these design challenges. What set this project apart was the use of the OIB certified system, Polyslope S. One of the notable highlights of this venture was the deep-rooted cooperation shared with the designer, and the strategic employment of the Polyslope S system accentuated the project's success.

Solution

The Polyslope S system, including MIRAGRID® GX 160, MIRAGRID Green and steel shuttering’s, was instrumental in the project's realization. This product was not arbitrarily chosen; it was the outcome of our meticulous design proposal, which indicated that this would offer the best solution, meeting the requirements of the ONR 24810 guideline. While the unreinforced embankment stood as a viable alternative, the results delivered by our chosen method spoke volumes. The construction phase transitioned seamlessly, culminating in a structure that has since operated flawlessly, with no grievances reported. Rockfall protection bunds, when crafted with geosynthetic solutions, pave the way for straightforward and economical construction. This endeavor marked our second collaboration with the owner, further solidifying our reputation as we met and exceeded both technical and economic benchmarks.
