Extreme-duty HDPE geomembrane for harsh containment environments
Preventing containment failure in harsh conditions
In mining, hazardous waste management, and chemical containment, geomembranes are the primary barrier against environmental contamination. But in extreme conditions – such as prolonged exposure to brine, tailings, chemicals, or high temperatures – standard liners can degrade prematurely. UV exposure, oxidative stress, and aggressive chemical attack can reduce service life, compromise containment integrity, and result in catastrophic leaks.
Engineered for maximum durability
GSE® HX is a premium-grade high-density polyethylene (HDPE) geomembrane designed for the most aggressive applications. Manufactured to exceed GRI GM13 specifications, GSE HX delivers exceptional resistance to chemical degradation, thermal stress, and UV exposure. Independent immersion testing in actual brine and copper tailing solutions at temperatures up to 75 C demonstrated negligible degradation even after 150 days, confirming its long-term performance in extreme mining and industrial conditions.
Superior material performance
GSE HX uses a premium HDPE resin with no fillers or nonessential additives, ensuring maximum structural integrity. It provides outstanding stress crack resistance, exceeding 1,000 hours without failure (GRI GM13 minimum is 500 hours), and retains mechanical properties under high loads and thermal cycling. Its exceptional chemical resistance makes it ideal for applications where harsh leachates or industrial liquids are present.
Advanced formulation for longevity
The geomembrane incorporates a specially engineered additive package to slow oxidation and resist UV degradation. High-pressure and standard oxidation induction time (HP-OIT and S-OIT) results after immersion testing remained well above GRI GM13 minimum requirements, even under elevated temperature exposure. Arrhenius modelling predicts antioxidant depletion times that’s satisfy the general containment service period called by the industry under the preset test conditions and respective brine and tailing solutions chemical composition.
Versatile in application
Proven in challenging environments, GSE HX is widely used for mining heap leach pads, tailings storage facilities, brine ponds, process water containment, hazardous waste landfills, and chemical storage basins. It is equally effective in solid and liquid waste containment for industrial operations, including oil and gas facilities. Smooth or textured finishes provide flexibility in interface design, white solar-reflective surfaces reduce thermal loading, and conductive-backed options enable efficient post-installation leak location surveys.
